Transnational white masculinity on Chinese social media: Western male vloggers’ self-representations during the covid-19 pandemic

This article explores how white Western male vloggers have sought to maintain their positive images among Chinese netizens on the video-sharing platform Bilibili during Covid-19 pandemic, when West and foreign migrants in China were lampooned scorned due rising nationalism. By analyzing these vloggers’ self-representations audience’s responses them, discusses identity is negotiated China’s state-regulated social media platforms this critical time. It shows that while carefully represent themselves as ideal China, they are subject criticisms from audience. In process, meanings attached become increasingly debated.
